Sri Lanka and South Africa can both provide strong accounting talent, but they should not be treated as interchangeable sources of cheaper labour. The better question is not which country is best. It is which location fits the role you are trying to build.
Around People uses Sri Lanka primarily for office-based bookkeeping and accounting production roles. South Africa is used for experienced accountants, senior accountants, auditors and client managers who may take on more judgement-heavy or client-facing work.
The short answer
| Requirement | Sri Lanka | South Africa |
|---|---|---|
| Typical role | Bookkeeper or accountant | Experienced accountant, senior accountant, senior auditor or client manager |
| Working model | Office-based in Colombo | Remote |
| Best fit | Structured production work | Complex, review or client-facing work |
| Budget | Lower monthly bands | Higher monthly bands reflecting seniority |
| Management need | Clear procedures and review | Clear authority, outcomes and communication expectations |
These are operating guidelines, not claims about every professional in either country. Strong candidates exist at different levels in both markets. The role specification and individual assessment still decide the hire.
When Sri Lanka is likely to fit
Sri Lanka is a strong option where the work is repeatable, system-led and capable of being reviewed through a clear workflow. Typical examples include bookkeeping, bank reconciliations, accounts payable, control-account work, working-paper preparation and accounts production support.
Around People’s Sri Lankan staff work from an office in Colombo. That provides a consistent workplace and local support structure. It does not remove the client’s responsibility to onboard and manage the person.
Sri Lanka is often the logical starting point when an accounting practice has recurring production work and can document how it should be completed. It is less suitable when the real requirement is an autonomous senior adviser but the role has been priced and described as basic production.
When South Africa is likely to fit
South Africa is generally the stronger Around People route for roles that need more experience, judgement, review responsibility or direct communication with clients. That can include senior accounting, audit work and client management.
The monthly cost is higher because the roles are normally more senior. Comparing a South African client manager with a Sri Lankan bookkeeper is not a meaningful country comparison. They solve different problems.
Time-zone overlap
Working overlap matters, but it should be considered alongside the workflow. South Africa offers close alignment with Ireland and the UK. Sri Lanka begins earlier, which can create useful morning progress before the Irish or UK day starts, but it requires a deliberate handover and agreed overlap window.
Do not hire someone and then discover that the manager is unavailable during every shared working hour. Agree the schedule, response expectations and meeting cadence before the person starts.
Client-facing work
Client contact should be assigned because the person has the experience, communication skills and authority to handle it, not merely because they speak fluent English or share a convenient time zone.
Start by defining the level of interaction: internal messages, routine client queries, review calls, deadline management or full portfolio ownership. The further the role moves towards client ownership, the more heavily you should weight judgement, confidence and prior experience.
Management and process maturity
Structured production work benefits from documented checklists, standard workpapers and clear review notes. Senior roles need those foundations too, but they also require defined decision rights. A senior accountant cannot operate effectively if every routine judgement must be escalated.
If your processes are inconsistent, hiring in either country will expose the problem. Offshore staffing adds capacity; it does not manufacture an operating system for the client.
Cost
| Location | Role | Indicative monthly fee |
|---|---|---|
| Sri Lanka | Bookkeeper | €1,750 to €2,250 |
| Sri Lanka | Senior bookkeeper | €2,250 to €2,750 |
| Sri Lanka | Accountant | €2,750 to €3,250 |
| South Africa | Senior bookkeeper | €2,800 to €3,500 |
| South Africa | Accountant | €3,500 to €4,000 |
| South Africa | Senior accountant | €4,000 to €4,500 |
These are indicative bands checked against the pricing page on 3 October 2026. Senior auditor and client manager fees are not published there; discuss the defined role rather than assuming these bands cover it. The placement fee is €1,950 plus VAT. Exact fees depend on the shortlist, experience and scope.
Choose the lowest-cost location only after confirming it can support the work. A cheaper person operating above their experience level creates review pressure and turnover. An unnecessarily senior hire can be equally wasteful when the work is almost entirely routine.
A better selection process
- Define the work and outcomes.
- Set the required experience and level of client contact.
- Confirm working-hour overlap.
- Identify the internal manager.
- Choose the location and salary band.
- Assess the individual candidate against the role.
Use a role brief, not a country scorecard
| Question | What to write before choosing a location |
|---|---|
| What must the person own? | List recurring responsibilities, rather than “help with accounts”. |
| How much judgement is required? | Distinguish preparation for review, reviewing others and owning client relationships. |
| Who will manage the person? | Name the manager and agree the working-hour overlap. |
| How will you assess the candidate? | Use role-relevant examples and questions about their own experience. |
Within Around People’s current offering, Sri Lanka provides office-based production roles and South Africa provides remote roles including more senior and client-facing responsibilities. Those are features of our recruitment model, not a ranking of the abilities of everyone in either country.
If you need someone to replace a partner in client meetings, say that in the brief. A lower-cost production role is not a substitute for client ownership.
